BK Board meeting, 1 November 2010

First, let the minutes show that the Giants won the Series. Represent.

BIKE PARKING, PROPERTY MGMT

Jordan has tried to meet with mgmt, who have repeatedly put off meeting. The property manager has left the company and will "inform" us when her position has been re-filled.

The folks across the street complained about our shop's general appearance. The tenants complained to the landlord, the landlord told us about it...we're going to send a certified-mail letter so we have a paper trail of trying to resolve the issue.

In the interim, bike parking is on hold.

We're still trying to resolve the tire issue. We need to call 311 and have someone in the shop in order to get tires claimed. Maybe four times a year?

The problem with the bike parking is not knowing whether we can drill through the pavers to anchor the racks--can we and will it even work.

In conjunction with redesigning the hanging bikes for storage, Ilana wants to contact Rebar about both the storage (for safety) and the bike parking as well. Rebar is a design group located in Mission Potrero, who converted a huge parking lot over by the Safeway lot to an urban "play space"; they're good at this sort of thing.

We also need to put the order in with the SFBC to find out how many spaces we could get installed along the sidewalk. However, we're not sure that the sidewalks around Mosaica are all public space. (Another thing to find out from building management.)

Actionable items:

  • Jordan needs to send a certified letter to building mgmt
  • Ilana is going to talk to Rebar
  • WHO is going to call SFBC about bike racks, AFTER property mgmt has clarified ownership of the sidewalks

LAWYER

Ilana will have us one by Thanksgiving. She has a lead on several organizations in the city who would probably be happy to hook us up. The SF Bar will refer people to us, but we want someone who will be around. We should have an email that Angel sent to the list, mentioning the law firm...

EMAIL

Alon will retire the old board email list; all correspondence will go to board@bikekitchen.org.

HELMETS

What's up with Rez and Sports Basement? Amar will follow up through LifeCycle to see who they correspond with at SB.

DISCUSSION ABOUT BOX DOG DONATIONS

Write this up later. We have the receipts.

GREETER, YOUTH

Greeter meeting: sat down with Shaun and discussed what the ideal greeter is. Maybe two: one to do computer stuff and one to show people around. The greeter would know the rules, be the go-to person. This implies experienced personnel. Jordan: It does need to be a formal position. There are unwritten rules that we expect people to follow, but people don't always follow them. (Example: people saying "We're closed" rudely when people come by the shop.) We need to train people. (Writing it down is a necessary but not sufficient condition.)

Youth: A lot of things have been applied inconsistently...a greeter could help with that.

(I've been talking too much and taking notes too little. Telegraphic:)

  • We don't want to turn away people who just want to greet and don't want to wrench
  • We think that we need relatively senior mechanics to be role models.
  • Maybe a board project? We show up and help greet? (Some are already doing this.)
  • What are people suggesting in the short run? No major changes: shadowing senior staff is a big deal. We need to groom greeters like we groom mechanics.
  • What about trying to recruit people as greeters?
  • Much on culture here.
  • Gets back to our recruitment issue. What we need is a regular staff training.

YOUTH

Youth don't have special privileges outside of youth hours. There's one wrench from each shift here...
