Ilana Goldbarg Statement
My love for the BK and our mission runs deep and began three years ago back in the summer of 2007. Since then I have worn just about every hat (or apron?) in the shop, from being a regular shift mechanic and class teacher, to creating a new class, building out our current space, developing the apprentice program, and acting as both the past Operations Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator (current). My motivation in seeking out a position on the BoD is because I care deeply about the long term health of the shop, and feel that as a veteran staff member, and successful fundraiser and project coordinator, that I can help to ensure our capacity to communicate well with each other in the ongoing function of the co-op, and to grow as an organization and contribute in new ways to the community at large.
As part of the fundraising effort during our move, I successfully organized a bike race, and championed a grant proposal, resulting in about $7K of donated funds. As a board member I can continue contribute to the assurance of our long term sustainability and promoting future growth by leading similar efforts. Aspects of non-fiscal growth that are important to me are seeking new ways for the BK to increase its visibility, promoting efforts to donate to other non-profit orgs in SF, and increasing the scope of our current youth program. I also find it vital that as we grow we also retain an element of our DIY sensibility, as well as the core values that the BK sprang from.
Most importantly, I have always felt strongly that the BoD should leave decisions on items that do not threaten the fiscal health or mission of the co-op strictly to the staff at large, and that transparency regarding the Board’s actions be a mandatory part of its function.
