The Bike Kitchen offers all sorts of volunteer opportunities, with varying levels of required experience. This page is a collection of the staff-level roles that we've dreamed up on the mailing list, but just don't have an actual person to fulfill them. Do you want be that person? If so, you can earn staff benefits. Just join the staff email list, express your interest in the role, and get started. Oh! And don't forget to remove the role from this wiki page and to update the [[People] [Who's Who]] page appropriately.

Donations Coordinator

This role involves making friends with all of the local bike shops, and asking them to collect their surplus and used parts in a box for us. Then you ride around the city in the Bike Kitchen rickshaw once a week (or whatever makes sense), pick up the parts, and bring them back to the Bike Kitchen. It's important to keep up on the mailing list for other donation opportunities too. For example, sometimes the folks email info AT bikekitchen DOT org with an offer to donate bikes or parts if we pick them up. The Donations Coordinator should also strive to keep fellow staff members up to date on the mailing list. Like, "Hey I just picked up a big donation and put it near the parts room. Please help sort!", etc. People will also probably have some relevant feedback like "Hey! We've got way too many 26" MTB tires!" and "We need all of the 700c wheels you can dredge up!" Fun! Right?

Bike Junk Pipeline Mechanic

We always struggle with the junk flow in the Bike Kitchen. Sometimes there's an overwhelming stream coming in and the shop gets super cluttered. Sometimes the metal recycling is overflowing and we need to get it purged. Sometimes (all the time?) Puritan New England is overrun with incomplete non-working parts and needs to be tidied up. Sometimes the Wild West parts digging room just has way too many hopeless derailleurs that need to make it to the metal recycling. Sometimes that box, bin, or drawer needs to be sorted and labeled. Would you enjoy putting in a 3-hour weekly shift at the BK making bike order from bike chaos? Maybe you want to be the Bike Kitchen Bike Junk Pipeline Mechanic.

Freehub Data Cruncher

freehub is the program we use to sign in patrons and staff, track patron information, etc. It would be rad if somebody wanted to make a weekly task of monitoring the freehub data stream, improving freehub, etc. One particular task that we discuss often is monitoring the hours that people volunteer so we can detect when people become staff. This way we can grant them keys, welcome them as staff, etc. Hop on board with the Information_Technology_Cluster if this sounds like you.
