Board Meeting

September 20, 2010

In attendance:

Amar, Jordan, Alon, Ilana, Angel, John-Paul

Agenda:

-officers

-financial/budgets

-youth program

-community development

Elected Officers

-President – Ilana

-Secretary – JP

Financials

-We’re loosing a little bit of money. It’s not horrible, but we should keep that in mind.

-JP’s going to focus on classes – two per month are a solid source of income. JP is class cluster coordinator for now, and is working on getting a greater rotation of mechanics into teach.

-EventBright v Brown Paper Tickets. A wash financially, but a better system than BPT. Comparable in terms of the PCness.

-$1,000 each for youth, WTF, $5,000 for facilities, $5,000 community development, $1,000 volunteers. Angel will email list serve.

-Set up a way to track this on the wiki for folks to check out.

Youth

-More folks are getting involved.

-Jordan brainstormed a whole list of rules and consequences for both volunteers and youth.

-Also going to the youth to see what they want out of the program.

-What about siblings? Maybe with parental permission younger siblings can hang out.

-Have the kids sign an agreement and teach them about how the shop works.

-Alon suggests simple rules – maybe send all youth to the coordinators. Maybe kids can earn hours during any hours but then can only get parts, etc during youth hours. What about kids who want to volunteer during regular shop hours? General discussion about youth program ideas. How many bikes?

-Liability – JP – we should get a pro bono lawyer. Ilana will see about getting one of her co workers.

-In summary, Jordan is program coordinator and Ilana will work on the lawyer. At the staff meeting on October 3, 2010, we’ll go over it again.

Community Development

-Amar’s proposal. Cycles of Change have a project called the Bikery in East Oakland which provides 20-30 free bikes to people who live in a distance of certain BART shops. Everyone gets a lock, helmet, and lights (they have a grant for that part).

-Wish list – 1) tools, 2) they’re developing a curriculum to mentor youth in leadership – they need money to pay the youth interns.

-Should we give them a big piece now, or a little bit over time? Ilana has a great idea for winterfest: our donation of a membership/digging rights will be paired up with (eg) Chrome and we should say we’re going to match (double or triple) the auction amount and donate that to the Bikery. Angel will run it by chrome.
